About Aggelos Margaritis

Born in Zagliveri, Thessaloniki in 1937, Aggelos Margaritis showed an inclination towards
music a young age. His earliest influence was his grandfather, Vasilios Geraleos who was a
psalt. In 1951, at the age of 14, he moved to Thessaloniki to learn the art of Byzantine chant‐
ing under Archon Protopsaltes and renowned teacher Athanasios Karamanis at the Metropolis
of Thessaloniki. In fact, the latter, recognizing the great talent of his pupil, offered to teach
him for free. Aggelos Margaritis became one of the most representative successors of Karama‐
nis’ art.
In 1954, at the age of 17, he began his career a protopsaltes at the Metropolitan Church of
Agia Skepi in Edessa. In 1963, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Athenagoras,
awarded him the Officion of Archon Protopsaltes of Constantinople, thus recognising officialy
his artistic merit.
From 1964 to 2009 he lived in Larissa. Initially he sang at the Holy Church of Panagia and
then in the Holy Church of Saints Constantine and Helen. In 2009 he moved to Athens
where he sang at the Holy Church of Timios Prodromos in Nea Philadelphia until the end of
his life.
Teaching the art of singing was another large part of artistic activity. He taught at the
Boarding School and the School of Byzantine Music of the Metropolis of Larissa, at the
school of the Metropolis of Elassona, at the schools of Tyrnavos, Gonnoi and Sycourio.
He was repeatedly elected president of the Chanter Association of Larissa. He was choirmas‐
ter of the choir of this association, which gave many outstanding performances during his
tenure.

Associations of Greece, where he was elected First Vice President.
In addition, he performed in numerous concerts with Byzantine, traditional and art music
ensembles, and as a soloist with western classical music choirs in Larissa, bringing many
awards and honours to the city.
